Butterfly Tours
Staff lead visitors
through the gardens of Landmark Inn where it's plants attract a
variety of beautiful butterflies. Tours begin in mid-April when the
butterflies migrate from Mexico and remain all summer long. The many
interesting species that visit the Inn range from the Monarch and
Swallow Tail, to the exotic Zebra Longwing butterfly. When the winds
change in October, the butterflies begin their migration back to
Mexico, once again stopping by the Landmark Inn. Come see the
butterflies and take a walk through the garden. To arrange a tour
(from 30 minutes to one hour), give us a call a day or two in
advance of your arrival.
A Walk Through Time
Step back in time to 1860 and tour the
"Vance Hotel" and grist mill with innkeeper and merchant John Vance. Guests who participate on these 25 to 40
minute tours will walk in the footsteps of pioneers and on an actual
segment of the old San Antonio-El Paso Road that led 49ers west. See
the site where Henri Castro and his survey party shot muskets across
the Medina River to "frighten away any Indians that might have been
lying in wait", and where colonists camped when beginning the
Castroville settlement. You will touch the workings of the Haass-Quintle Mill (1853) and hear the splash of water striking the
mill's turbine blades. See the thick stone walls built by Caesar
Monod and John Vance that housed the inn, mercantile, kitchen,
bathhouse, and residence. You'll also stroll past perhaps Texas'
longest waterfall, created when Louis Haas and Laurent Quintle first
impounded the wild Medina to power their mill. Comfortable shoes are
suggested. Tours are offered by appointment Tuesday through Saturday
for groups of 10 to 40 in number: cost is $3.00 per person. Call the
Landmark Inn to make arrangements.
