migration. Many interesting species of butterflies are attracted to
the Inn gardens including Monarchs, Swallow Tails, and even exotic
Zebra Longwings. Guided tours are available beginning in mid-April when the
butterflies migrate north from Mexico and
again in October when the butterflies begin their
migration south back to Mexico. Tours for the general public are
Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays year-around at 3 p.m. There is no
charge for tours, however there is a $3.00 admission fee to the
park, with children 12-years-old and younger admitted free.
Group tours must make
arrangements in advance and there is a charge for group tours.
A Walk Through Time
The
Landmark Inn State Historic Site offers a unique opportunity to
learn about Texas History and meaningful global events that lead to
the establishment of Castroville as a colony in 1844. The Landmark
Inn is located on the historic
Camino Real de
los Tejas National Historic Trail, a main trail across Texas
extending from Mexico to Natchitoches, Louisiana. Below the Inn on
the Medina River is the site where colonists camped
during the first days of the
Castroville settlement while learning to live in
the Texas wilderness. One of the best preserved gristmills in Texas
is also part of the Landmark Inn State Historic Site. Original stone
wall buildings, some of the oldest in Texas, house an operating bed
and breakfast inn, historic store, kitchen,
and historic bathhouse.
Enjoy fishing or swimming in the mill pond created when Louis Haas and Laurent Quintle first
harnessed the Medina to power their
gristmill. Tours are offered
Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 3 p.m. and by
appointment. There is no cost for tours, but there is a $3.00
admission fee to the site. Children 12-years-old
and younger are admitted free.
Group tours must make
arrangements in advance and there is a charge for group tours.
